BENSON ABROAD | RIO de JANEIRO WITH JULIA MUNIZ ROBINSON

We caught up with model, mum, content creator and globetrotter Julia Muniz Robinson to uncover the secrets of one of her favourite cities in the world; Rio de Janeiro! Born in Brazil, Julia shows us how to live like a local - sharing all the inside tips from the best hotels and beaches to the out of town getaways worth making. From the small moments like the best coffee spot or best bar to the big holiday decisions such as what to pack and where to go, this is the list you’ve dreamed of for exploring Rio the right way.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF -

I work as a model, content creator, and creative consultant in the fashion and lifestyle space, often collaborating with my husband who’s a professional surfer. Together, we run a creative production company focused on capturing elevated, story-driven content around the world.

I also founded a swimwear label that’s been gaining amazing momentum globally, though I’ve recently taken a step back to spend more time with my family and dive deeper into travel and storytelling. I’m passionate about bringing authenticity, culture, and visual beauty into everything I do.

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR CONNECTION TO THIS DESTINATION?

I’m originally from Espírito Santo, a state just north of Rio. I’ve spent so much time in Rio growing up — it was the place that first sparked my curiosity for the world. There’s just something about the energy — the rhythm, the people, the beauty — that made me want to explore more. Rio truly holds a special place in my heart.

IF SOMEONE ONLY HAD 24 HOURS IN THIS CITY, WHAT SHOULD THEY ABSOLUTELY DO?

Start your day watching the sunrise from Arpoador with a fresh coconut in hand. Then head to Ipanema or Leblon for a swim, followed by lunch at Bondai Praia or a laid-back spot in Jardim Botânico. In the afternoon, go up to Santa Teresa for a dose of culture and local art, then end the day with sunset at Mirante Dona Marta or Pedra do Sal for live samba.

THE ‘IT’ HOTEL AT THE MOMENT IN RIO

Vila Santa Teresa (bottom right) is such a gem — super elevated and local, with the most breathtaking views of the city. If you want beachfront meets architectural beauty, JANEIRO Hotel in Leblon (bottom left) is unmatched.

THE CITY’S DRESS CODE?

Effortless. Think breezy linens, gold jewelry, and havaianas that take you from the beach to a chic bar.

THE ONLY PLACE FOR AN EARLY MORNING WORKOUT?

The beach path between Leblon and Arpoador is where everyone is out walking, running, or working out. There's something magical about training with that view and vibe.

THE ONE PLACE ONLY LOCALS KNOW ABOUT?

Praia da Joatinga

THE COOLEST NEIGHBOURHOOD OR ISLAND FOR PEOPLE WATCHING?

Santa Teresa — full of artists, creatives, and bohemians. For beach culture and stylish locals, Leblon is always a scene.

THE BEST PLACE FOR A WEEKEND BRUNCH?

Empório Jardim in Jardim Botânico — their pão de queijo with scrambled eggs is addictive.

THE OUT OF TOWN GETAWAY WORTH MENTIONING?

If you have time, go to Angra dos Reis or Búzios. Angra is all about crystal-clear water and islands you can boat between, while Búzios has charming boutiques and a French-Brazilian vibe.

THE RESTAURANT WORTH BOOKING IN ADVANCE?

Oteque. A fine dining experience that’s modern but deeply rooted in Brazilian ingredients and techniques.

BEST COFFEE SPOT…

Musa Café — it’s Aussie-Brazilian owned and the hottest spot in town right now. Great energy, beautiful interiors, and the kind of coffee that makes you want to stay all day.

THE BAR YOU ALWAYS END THE NIGHT AT?

Bar dos Descasados at Hotel Santa Teresa — great cocktails and the perfect mix of locals and travelers.

ANY OFF THE RADAR FOOD MARKETS, STREET FOOD STALLS OR BAKERIES YOU SWEAR BY?

The tapioca stalls at the Feira Hippie in Ipanema are worth hunting down on a Sunday.

“Rio has a soul — it’s raw, beautiful, wild, and soft all at once. It reminds you to live with feeling.”

THE NEXT PLACE I’M HEADED TO?

Back to the Maldives for a project I’m super excited about — ocean, sun, and creativity.

WHAT I ALWAYS PACK WHEN I TRAVEL?

My rio set from MAOI swim, my son Zen haha, my digital camera, and a silk scarf - it works as a sarong, hair wrap, or top.
