The Benson Bespoke guide to Uluwatu, Indonesia
Uluwatu sits at the southernmost tip of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, a world apart from the bustle of Seminyak and the rice terraces of Ubud. Here, dramatic limestone cliffs plunge into the Indian Ocean, surf breaks draw devotees from across the globe, and a quietly sophisticated scene has taken root among the coconut palms. This is our edit of the best the peninsula has to offer: where to stay, eat, restore, and simply be.
Where to Stay
Alila Uluwatu - Perched on the cliff edge above the ocean, Alila Uluwatu is the benchmark for secluded luxury on the peninsula. Sustainability and architecture are in elegant conversation here — open-air pavilions, a clifftop infinity pool, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why you left home. The service is unhurried and intuitive. Book a cliff pool villa if you can, and plan to stay in at least one evening.
Anantara Uluwatu - Clifftop drama with a more accessible entry point than its ultra-luxury neighbours. The infinity pool seemingly floats above the ocean, the rooms are spacious and beautifully appointed, and the IKAN restaurant is worth a visit even if you're not staying. A strong choice for couples.
Suarga Padang Padang - Set above one of Bali's most loved surf breaks, Suarga is where design and nature feel genuinely in balance. Thatched villas nestle into the jungle canopy, the pool looks out over the Indian Ocean, and the sunset from the terrace is among the best on the peninsula. Relaxed, beautiful, and unpretentious.
Uluwatu Surf Villas - The go-to for travellers who want proximity to the break without sacrificing comfort. Thoughtfully designed private villas, a strong sense of community, and a location that puts you within reach of everything Uluwatu does best. Perfect for groups or anyone who wants the surf life done properly.
Mu Bungalows - Perched above Bingin Beach, Mu has a devoted following and it's easy to see why. The bungalows are simple and characterful, the clifftop setting is extraordinary, and the on-site restaurant Abracadabra is one of the best dinners on the peninsula. This is Uluwatu at its most soulful.
Asa Maia - A quieter, more intimate option for those who prefer considered design and genuine privacy over hotel amenities. The villas are beautifully crafted, the setting is lush and serene, and the experience feels closer to renting a private home than staying in a hotel. A wonderful choice for honeymooners or anyone simply wanting to disappear for a while.
Breakfast
The breakfast scene in Uluwatu punches well above its weight. Our recommendations:
Analog — A serene, Japanese-inflected café with excellent pour-overs and a menu that rewards slow mornings.
Drifter — Relaxed and earthy, with wholesome bowls and a loyal local following.
Ulu Artisan — Craft coffee done properly, in a setting that feels genuinely considered.
Alchemy — The original Canggu institution now has a Uluwatu presence. Raw and plant-based, but far from austere.
Suka Espresso — Neighbourhood energy with serious coffee credentials. A good first stop before the beach.
Experiences
Balinese Massage at Mu Bali
Set into the cliffside above Bingin Beach, Mu Bali offers traditional Balinese massage in open-air bales with one of the most extraordinary views on the island. The sound of the surf below, the warmth of the treatment, the ocean stretching to the horizon — this is the kind of experience that stays with you long after you've returned home. Book ahead; it fills quickly.
Yoga at Morning Light Studio
Morning Light Studio has earned its reputation for a reason. Set among the jungle canopy with an open-sided shala that frames the treetops, the classes here feel less like exercise and more like a genuine reset. Arrive early and take in the stillness before the session begins.
Sunset at Suarga Padang Padang
The sunsets from Suarga Padang Padang are, simply, unmissable. Position yourself on the clifftop terrace as the light turns amber, then deep red over the Indian Ocean. Order a drink, say nothing, and watch.
Shop at Cove Essentials
A beautifully edited concept store with an eye for the understated. Sunglasses, scarves, candles, and objects you didn't know you needed until they were in your hands. The kind of shop that reflects the best of Uluwatu's aesthetic — considered, unhurried, quietly luxurious.
Dinner
Uluwatu's dining scene has matured considerably. These are our current favourites:
Mana — Fresh, ingredient-led cooking in a warm, candlelit setting. One of the peninsula's most consistent kitchens.
Il Salotto — Italian soul with Balinese sensibility. The pasta is made in-house; the wine list, carefully chosen.
Abracadabra at Mu — Perched above Bingin, this is dinner with a view that justifies the journey alone. Creative, confident cooking.
Yuki — Japanese precision meets tropical ease. Understated and quietly excellent.
Mason — A Uluwatu institution. The wood-fired kitchen and convivial atmosphere make this a reliable favourite for groups.
Kala — Elegant, pared-back, and genuinely exciting. Book ahead — it's small and fills fast.
